A Tamil Nadu village gets its first government bus

Ayan Reddiyapatti now has direct public transport for the first time since India gained independence, with a new government bus linking the village to Virudhunagar. The service began on Sunday and allows local students to board within their own village instead of walking at least two kilometres to catch buses for school.

Tamil Nadu Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu, who comes from the village, flagged off the service and travelled aboard the inaugural bus. Residents and elders from different communities gathered to welcome its arrival, reflecting how strongly a routine piece of infrastructure can change daily life in a place long left without it.

Arasu said his late parents had often asked him to contribute to the village’s welfare. He described securing the route as fulfilling their wish and thanked Tamil Nadu’s chief minister and transport minister for helping make it possible.

The reports did not specify how frequently the bus will run or how many people it will serve. Its immediate benefit, however, is clear: students have a shorter and simpler journey to school, while other residents have gained a direct public connection to Virudhunagar.
