Bhubaneswar adds 1,608 affordable homes for low-income families
Two affordable housing projects containing 1,608 homes were inaugurated in Bhubaneswar, the capital of India’s Odisha state, on 13 October. Separately, 962 families received possession of homes at four other developments in the city.
The new Ghatikia development contains 928 homes, while Mukteswar Residency at Gadakana has 680. The Gadakana complex includes electricity, water supply and sanitation facilities. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi handed housing allotments to some beneficiaries during the inauguration.
Some families at Buddha Vihar, one of the four other developments, also received bank loan assistance to help pay their share of housing costs.
Majhi also laid the foundation stone for a rental housing project at Gadakana, intended to provide lower-cost accommodation for migrant workers and low-income families near their workplaces. That project is planned rather than completed, with 296 rental and temporary housing units due to be built.
Alongside the housing initiatives, 12 playgrounds and sports grounds were inaugurated in Bhubaneswar and adjoining areas. Developed across neighbourhoods and school premises, they are intended to give children, young people and other residents more opportunities for outdoor games, exercise and sports training.
