Brazilian student born without arms earns his driving licence

Reiner Jesus Martins, a 20-year-old Brazilian student born without arms, has earned his driving licence after learning to drive an adapted car with his feet. He passed the practical test on his first attempt, following 30 driving lessons.

Getting there meant finding both the right equipment and instruction. A medical panel determined which vehicle adaptations he needed, but locating a driving school with a suitable car proved difficult. He eventually found one in Pará de Minas, in Brazil’s southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Martins also reported bureaucratic obstacles and a lack of preparation among some professionals involved in the process.

Now studying agronomy at the Federal University of Lavras, Martins already lives alone and manages everyday tasks independently. With encouragement from his mother and therapy during childhood, he learned to write, eat and dress using his feet. Driving adds another skill to that daily independence.

He does not own a car, a distinction he acknowledged when describing the licence as a major achievement. Above all, he told BHAZ, it represents “autonomy and freedom”. He also wants the licensing process for people with disabilities to improve, with better accessibility, clearer information and better-prepared professionals. His achievement is personal, but the changes he calls for could help others pursue the same opportunity.
