Denmark’s largest known Viking-age silver hoard reveals far-reaching connections

A chance garden discovery has given archaeologists Denmark’s largest known silver hoard from the Viking Age. Found beneath a home in Rebild municipality, the collection weighs about 18.5 kilograms and contains roughly 700 objects and fragments, nearly three times the weight of the country’s previous record find.

The homeowner uncovered the first pieces while preparing the ground for a terrace. Around 320 objects remained inside a ceramic vessel, while others were scattered nearby. The hoard consists mainly of silver ingots and jewellery, with relatively few coins. Researchers say the way some ingots were grouped by weight suggests silver served as a practical system for storing wealth and making payments.

Coins provide clues to both the hoard’s age and Denmark’s wider connections. Anglo-Saxon examples were minted during the reign of Edward the Elder, from 899 to 924, while other coins originated in the Islamic world and circulated during the 10th century. Together, they show that northern Jutland participated in economic and cultural networks extending across Europe and eastward.

The objects have been transferred to Denmark’s National Museum for assessment and further study. Because the site lies within a modern residential area, extensive excavation is unlikely, leaving the reason the silver was buried unresolved.
