Global electric truck and bus sales surged 86% in 2025

Worldwide sales of electric trucks and buses reached roughly 500,000 in 2025, an 86% increase from the previous year, according to an International Council on Clean Transportation study. China accounted for nearly 90% of global sales. Its medium-sized and heavy electric truck market grew more than fivefold in two years, and almost 30% of heavy trucks sold there in 2025 were fully electric.

Momentum also extended beyond China. The European Union, India, Brazil and the United Kingdom recorded double-digit growth, driven mainly by expanding electric bus fleets. Electric models represented 17% of all buses sold worldwide. Outside China and the United States, buses accounted for more than half of zero-emission medium-sized and heavy commercial vehicle sales. The EU sold about 9,800 electric buses, compared with roughly 5,000 in India.

Lower battery costs and government support helped accelerate adoption in China. Significant obstacles remain, particularly limited charging infrastructure and uncertainty about whether trucks can recharge along their routes. The cost comparison with diesel also depends on electricity and fuel prices, a crucial concern for freight operators working with narrow profit margins.
