Indonesia Earns US$103.78 Million for Verified Forest-Emission Cuts

Indonesia has secured US$103.78 million from the Green Climate Fund after demonstrating that emissions from deforestation and forest degradation were reduced by 20.25 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent during 2014–2016. The results-based award recognizes an achievement already delivered rather than a future pledge.

The funding is managed by Indonesia’s Environmental Fund Management Agency through a REDD+ program. From August 2023 through July 2026, the agency distributed more than 500 billion rupiah, or 37% of the program’s total allocation.

Projects have supported the expansion of social forestry across more than 2 million hectares, facilitated over 40 proposals to designate customary forests, and provided business assistance and equipment to social-forestry groups. The initiative has also backed fire-prevention groups, patrol capacity, forest rehabilitation, climate registries and sustainable waste management.

By July 2026, the program had reached about 1,266 villages in 225 districts. Thirty-four provinces have now accessed funding, with commitments totaling 761 billion rupiah—94.8% of the provincial allocation. This part of the program is scheduled to continue through 2030.
