Iran opens 20 community mental health units within public care network

Iran has opened 20 new Seraj mental and social health units and fully integrated the program into the country’s public health network. The centers are designed to expand access, particularly in less-served areas, by providing psychiatric, psychological and social-work support together, free of charge.

The model treats mental distress as more than an isolated clinical problem. Teams can consider pressures such as unemployment, poverty, addiction, violence and family difficulties, then draw on neighborhood resources or connect people with further support. Health officials describe this as a shift from care focused only on individuals and families toward care rooted in the communities where people live.

Seraj centers have also handled referrals for people identified through the national 190 line as being at high psychological risk, while mental-health screening for health-system workers is now among their specialist services. Plans call for psychological, social and livelihood assistance for children harmed in a recent crisis, in cooperation with the labor and social welfare ministry.

The same opening included three addiction harm-reduction units. Officials cautioned that expansion must be matched by consistent service quality, updated protocols and enough trained staff, with staffing still a challenge. Even with those constraints, embedding multidisciplinary mental-health care in an established public network creates a stronger route to reach people earlier and closer to home.
