Long-delayed Ciudad Madero hospital opens with expanded capacity

A long-delayed public hospital has opened in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, expanding local capacity to 179 beds, 20 consulting rooms and five operating theatres. The IMSS-Bienestar facility is expected to serve more than 538,000 people without social security coverage across the Ciudad Madero–Tampico metropolitan area.

The new general hospital replaces the city’s 93-year-old civil hospital and substantially increases capacity: the previous facility had fewer than 100 beds, 10 consulting rooms and two operating theatres. Patients can now access 20 specialties, including adult and paediatric cardiology, ophthalmology, neurology, nephrology, urology, cancer surgery and haematology.

More than one billion Mexican pesos was invested in recovering and equipping the project, which began in 2015, stalled, and was resumed in 2023. Its equipment includes a CT scanner, mammography and bone-density machines, a fluoroscope and a C-arm imaging system. The hospital is also set up for digital clinical records, intended to make patient follow-up faster. One hundred newly hired nurses and specialist doctors will join staff transferred from the former civil hospital.
