Senegal receives 153 ambulances to strengthen emergency care

Senegal has received 153 medically equipped ambulances, bringing the number delivered since June 2024 to 246. The new vehicles cost 8.1 billion CFA francs and were acquired with support from the health ministry’s technical and financial partners. They were assembled and equipped in Senegal.

The ambulances are intended to strengthen emergency treatment and patient transport across the country. They will support the regional rollout of mobile emergency and resuscitation services and help move patients from remote communities to appropriate care. Women, children and older people are expected to be among the main beneficiaries.

At the September 10 handover in Dakar, Senegal’s president urged health facility managers and local government leaders to ensure the vehicles are properly maintained and used, an important condition for turning new equipment into reliable care.

The delivery is part of Senegal’s national health system transformation strategy for 2025 to 2034. The presidency says 275 billion CFA francs has been mobilized so far to upgrade the country’s medical equipment and technical capacity. Together, the ambulance purchases and broader investment are designed to make urgent care more reachable beyond major cities.
