Teenager walks and runs normally after 16 centimetres of bone lengthening
A 15-year-old in Chiayi, Taiwan, can now walk and run normally after two staged operations corrected about 16 centimetres of leg-length difference. The treatment at Chiayi Christian Hospital preserved his own leg in a case severe enough that clinicians said amputation and a prosthesis could otherwise have become necessary.
The boy had underdevelopment of the tibia and premature closure of a growth plate. His legs diverged in length as he grew, leaving him with a limp and making standing, exercise and keeping up with classmates difficult. Four years ago, surgeons began treatment with a circular external fixator. After cutting the bone, they adjusted the frame by less than a millimetre a day, creating space in which new bone and surrounding blood vessels, muscles, nerves and soft tissue could develop.
The first procedure lengthened the limb by roughly eight centimetres. A renewed discrepancy emerged during his adolescent growth spurt, so he underwent a second operation this year, bringing the total correction to about 16 centimetres.
The process required daily wound care, months wearing the frame and continued rehabilitation. Clinicians stressed that lengthening must remain within safe physiological limits because excessive adjustment can injure nerves and blood vessels. They also urged early orthopaedic assessment when children have persistent limping, uneven shoe wear, pelvic tilt or visibly unequal leg lengths.
