Ultra-aerodynamic EV completes 1,278 km trip with one recharge
A four-seat electric prototype has completed a 1,278-kilometre journey across Central Europe with only one charging stop, showing how careful design can extend range without an enormous battery. Travelling from Wolfsburg to Vienna via Poznań and Olomouc, Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency averaged about 68 km/h and arrived with an estimated 164 kilometres of range remaining.
The car consumed 7.51 kWh per 100 kilometres when charging losses were included. In a separate controlled test, it achieved 6.48 kWh per 100 kilometres, although that run was conducted at a constant 68 km/h on level ground with equipment such as air conditioning switched off.
Much of the improvement came from reducing air resistance. The teardrop-shaped coupé has enclosed rear wheels, a covered underside and cooling flaps that open only when needed. Its reported drag coefficient of 0.158 was recognized as a record in its category. A 370-watt solar system can also power onboard equipment and, depending on weather, season and location, add up to 30 kilometres of daily range.
Importantly, the prototype uses a 99 kW motor and 54.9 kWh battery derived from technology developed for the ID. Polo. The complete car is not planned for sale, but it serves as a practical test bed for improving future production EVs.
